Captain Washington, commanding First BattalionThirteenth U. S. Infantry, was twice wounded while gal-lantly leading his men to the assault. The command thendevolved upon Captain Charles Ewing, who carried thecolors of his battalion close under the parapets of the enemy, after three color-bearers had been successively either killedor wounded. He was himself slightly wounded in the handand received another bullet through his hat. Captain Wash-ington is a prisoner in the hands of the enemy. I earnestlyrecommend both of these officers for promotion for gallantryon the field as well as their eminent fitness for higher com-mands. Colonel Thomas Kilby Smith, commanding SecondBrigade, reports: I perceived their colors advanced to thevery base of the parapet, and also that my brigade was alone,. R. DE TROBRIAND. BVT.
