Mary Seacole, 19th-century marble bust. Jamaican businesswoman and nurse Mary Seacole (1805-1881) is best known for her work during the Crimean War (1853-1856). She set up an establishment that provided sleeping quarters and food for British soldiers. She also visited the battlefields to sell provisions to the soldiers. She later published an autobiography titled 'Wonderful Adventures of Mrs Seacole in Many Lands' (1857). This marble bust dates from 1859, and was created by British sculptor Henry Weekes (1807-1877). It forms part of the collections at the J. Paul Getty Museum.
