Some years ago theconferring of that honor would have given him distinction. The institution,however, gained by procrastination ; in finally electing Mr. Gifford it addedto its own laurels. The new member was born on the island of Naushon, inBuzzards Bay, near the coast of Massachusetts, on the 23d of December, 1840.
