Sgt. Vincent J. Palumbo, October 1918. The photograph shows a Rice Dirigible Balloon with side propellers turned straight up, used to ascend straight up on an even keel. The 4 side propellers can raise a 9-ton Airship to a height of about 3,000 ft. The propellers, when turned down, can draw the Airship below the line of equipoise, giving it a radius of about 6,000 ft. This unique feature has not been attempted in any other airship construction. This image is not to be published and is for official use only.
