But to a certain extent even the credit of Charlesscollection should belong to the Earl, as it was lie who recommendedand by his own example stimulated the King to the task. Themode in which the Earl set to work to accomplish the object he haddetermined to attain, is peculiarly worthy of notice. The exclusiveservices of two of the most accomplished men of the day, Evelynand Mr. (afterwards Sir William) Petty, were secured by the Earl,and the former despatched to Rome, while the latter undertook ajourney of no ordinary hazard to the Greek Islands and the M
