The Killing Fields of Choeung Ek, Cambodia

The killing fields of Choeung Ek, near Phnom Penh, Cambodia. Between 1975 and 1979, about 17,000 men, women and children were killed here, after being tortured and detained at S-21 prison (now Tuol Sleng museum in Phnom Penh). They were often bludgeoned to death to save precious bullets. More than 8,000 skulls excavated from the mass graves, are arranged inside the memorial stupa, erected in 1988.
