Huntingtower castle near Perth, Scotland, UK

Huntingtower Castle is maintained by Historic Scotland. Located on the outskirts of Perth in Scotland, UK. A residence of nobility for over 300 years, from the 15th to the 18th century. Initially belonging to the Ruthvens family (later earls of Gowrie). In 1600 it was taken from after their involvement in a conspiracy plot. It was then given to the Murrays (earls of Tullibardine and later dukes of Atholl). Prior to 1600, Huntingtower was known as the Place of Ruthven. Huntingtower has been visited by many famous characters in Scottish history, including Mary Queen of Scots who stayed here in 1565, during her honeymoon with Lord Darnley. Mary’s son, James VI, also was held in the castle against his will in 1582 by the 1st Earl of Gowrie during the 'Ruthven Raid’.
