EDWARD SHINN LAWRANCE is now the head of the LAWRANCE family of Philadelphia, al-though he is the youngest son of Samuel, who was-the youngest son of Thomas, of Philadelphia, whodied 1 mo. 30th, 1802, at No. 19 JSorth Water Street,Philadelphia, where he had lived many years, next doorSouth of the residence of Stephen Girard, who was thenlooming up as Philadelphias greatest merchant. Thefirst Directory published in Philadelphia was for theyear of 1785. It located Thomas Lawrance in ChurchAlley, between Second and Third Streets. The nexfc 48. I GENEALOGICAL NOTES, Directory published was for the year of 1791; it locatedhim at No. 19 North Water Street, where he remaineduntil his death, in 1802. In 1797 Stephen Girard movedinto his house, next door to Thomas Lawrance, and con-tinued to live there till his death, in 1831. The twohouses were divided by Says Alley, running to the grounds extended to the river on each side of theAlley, as Delaware Avenue had not been opened. Steph-en Girard was on the north side of the Alley, and ThomasLawrance was on the south side of the Alley, and sothey lived, next door neighbors, from 1797 to 1802. Ev-ery thing relating to Stephen Girard is interesting toPhiladelphians. One cold, frosty morning, in winter,two children were playing with snow on Thomas Law-rances porch towards the river. One was Sam, theyoungest son of Thomas Lawrance, and the other wasMartha, a daughter of Richard Lawrance;
