The bark on a Ponderosa Pine, Pinus ponderosa subsp. ponderosa, in Troy, Montana. The young ponderosa pine has a darker brown to almost black appearance, as opposed the the broad, golden brown bark plates of the older, more mature trees of this species. The young tress are sometimes refered to as "blackjacks" because of their darker bark. This particular tree is of the subspecies ssp. ponderosa, which is the predominant ponderosa subspecies found growing in the northern Cascades and Rocky Mountain ranges.
