DNA discovery, 40th anniversary event. King's College London researchers at the 1993 unveiling of a plaque to celebrate their X-ray diffraction work here on the structure of DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid) in the 1950s. The discovery was announced in 1953 by James Watson and Francis Crick. From left: Raymond Gosling (1926-2015), Herbert Wilson (1929-2008), Maurice Wilkins (1916-2004) and Alexander Stokes (1919-2003). The blue plaque on the wall names them, along with their colleague Rosalind Franklin (1920-1958). A molecular model of DNA is at centre. Wilkins shared the 1962 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine with Crick and Watson.
