The water trough is attached to the right of the frame enclosing the feed box. The iron pipes protecting the side wall of the chamber are made from stock material used by plumbers. The chain attached to the left of the stanchion is used to force the animal to remain in a standing position. The free end of the chain is attached to a wire cable which can be rolled up by a pulley (ma- nipulated outside the chamber wall), thus raising the loop formed at the bottom until it reaches the throat of the animal. The stanchion is of the adjustable form so that ani- mals of different body length will be forced to stand with their hind feet near the grid, which is seen in the foreground. The tube attached vertically to the post on the right is the device used to signal when the animal lies down or rises. A weight sliding up and down within this tube is connected by means of a heavy cord to a belt around the chest of the animal. As the weight thus slides up or down it connects momentary contact and thus forms a circuit for a small dry cell battery which rings a bell.
