Hastings Castle was the first Norman motte and bailey castle to be built here by William the Conqueror. Within the castle is the fallen stonework of the Collegaiate Church of St. Mary-in-the-Castle. It was built around 1075 possibly on the very site of a Saxon chapel. In 1546, the Church was dissolved by King Henry V111 as part of the Dissolution of the Monasteries.
