A wall mounted mail box dating from the reign of Queen Victoria in the historic town of Rye, East Sussex, UK.

The first pillar boxes in this country appeared in the Channel Island in 1852. Prior to that letter receiving offices, often miles away from where you lived, were used to "post" your letter. They were introduced after Anthont Trollope, ( then a General Post Office Official and later famous Victorian author) noted their use in Europe and introduced them in the UK. The wall box, as in this image, was often used in rural areas or places where there was no pavement on which to place the more well known pillar box.
