In the United States in 1919, 9S beet-sugar mills were standing- and e(iuii3ped for extracting and refining- sugar from beet roots. The oldest one of the mills noAv standing was built in 1870 at Ah^arado, Calif. During the summer of 1919, 4 of the 98 mills had been ei'ected and equipped for the campaign of 1919-20, C> additional ones Avere built ancf equipped for the handling of the 1920-t21 crop, and two others are iii i)rocess of construction, making a total of lOG beet- sugar mills now standing.
