A late 19th Century illustration of Cyaxares (625–585 BC), the third and most capable king of Media, calling on his subjects to free their country of the Scythian. The first to divide his troops into separate sections of spearmen, archers, and horsemen, he united most of the Iranian tribes of ancient Iran. Conquering neighbouring territories, Cyaxares transformed the Median Empire into a regional power, facilitating the fall of the Neo-Assyrian Empire, and repelled the Scythians from Media.
