Totnes Castle, aerial photograph. Located on a hill overlooking Totnes on the River Dart, Devon, Totnes Castle is situated at a key stategic position where three valleys meet. The earthworks surrounding the site date from the 11th century. The circular stone keep on top of the motte (mound) was first built during the 13th century and then reconstructed at the beginning of the 14th century. Little remains of the original motte and bailey castle, though the stone keep is one of the best preserved in England.
