Fig. I is a perspective plan and fig. 2 a similar view, withthe head of the coupler shown in section. The knuckle A is ofa Z shape, and in fig. i is shown in the position it occupieswhen open, and in fig. 2 it is shown closed. When the lock-ing pin P is withdrawn the knuckle can be swung into the open. Fig. 2. position shown in fig. i. The inside arm £ of the knuckle thencomes below the pin and supports it. When the knuckle iscompletely open the pin rests on the end of the arm j5 in astep F. The weight of the locking pin and its connections thusholds the knuckle in its open position for coupling. When twooperi couplers come together the force of the blow raises thelocking pin out of the depression F, the knuckle is turned onthe pivot pin C, and the arm /! is pushed back from under the pininto the position shown in fig. 2. In this position it no longersupports the locking-pin, which then falls 6 in. into the hole P, and the knuckle bears against the pin at £, and is thus securelylocked. At the same time the arm B is held in the recess madeto receive it in the coupler-head. It is there enclosed by asolid wall of metal, so that with the locking and pivot pins itforms a triple combination to resist the pulling force on thecouplers. Even if the pivot pin C should be broken or re-moved,
