Pulmonary fibrosis. Coloured chest X-ray of a of a 91-year-old male patient with pulmonary fibrosis - a condition affecting the lungs. The X-ray shows diffuse lesions throughout the lung tissue. The condition is of unknown cause, and is thought to be fibrosing alveolitis. Also known as idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis and cryptogenic fibrosing alveolitis, this is a condition where the lung's alveoli gradually thicken and scar due to chronic, progressive inflammation. This is sometimes due to an autoimmune disorder such as lupus or rheumatoid arthritis. This scarring is seen as a general cloudiness.
