The wood is placed in these air-tight ovens which are heated to high tempera- tures. The gases that pass off are collected and used as the basis of several wood chemicals. The residue, charcoal, was formerly made in the wasteful open air pits. Large quantities of limb wood, stumps and mill waste, in- cluding sawdust, slabs and defective material, are now being used in this industry so it is playing an important part in the closer and more effective utilization of the raw products of the forest. The process consists largely of the dry distillation of wood,.
