Cooley's cyclopaedia of practical receipts and collateral information in the arts, manufactures, professions, and trades including medicine, pharmacy, hygiene, and domestic economy : designed as a comprehensive supplement to the Pharmacopoeia and general book of reference for the manufacturer, tradesman, amateur, and heads of families . soon as it has become weight, in grains, gives the gross weightper cent, of non-volatile matter (fixed alka-line and earthy chlorides, phosphates, and sul-phates) ; the total loss of weight by combus-tion denotes the gross per-centage of com-bustible and volatile matter (urea, uric acid, ammoniacal salts, and organic matter). Thelatter should not be less than 55 to 60§. 2. a. A second 100 gr. of the guano, se-lected as before, is distilled along with about75 gr. of fresh-slaked quicklime, and a littlewater, in a small matrass connected with atubular, triple bulb-condenser, containing colddistilled water, and immersed in a basin ofice-cold water. (See engr.) The condenser ischarged by plunging one of its extremitiesinto the water, and sucking at the other, untilthe liquid reaches the level indicated in themargin. A very gentle heat only, cautiouslyincreased, need be employed. After the pro-cess is over, the strength of the solution ofammonia found in the condenser is tested,. either by taking its density in a small specific-gravity bottle, or by determining its saturat- 1 According to Br Noad, the proportioii of water iagenuine guanos ranges from 7 to 20g. 826 GUANO ing power in the manner described underAlkalimetry. This furnishes the per-centageof ready formed ammonia sufficiently accuratefor all ordinary purposes, provided proper careis taken. When extreme accuracy is requ ired, thecondenser is charged with a weighed quantityof dilute hydrochloric acid of a known strength, instead of water, and after the process is over, this is tested as before. The quantity of am-moniacal test-liquor (see Alkalimetbt) nowtaken to saturate
