Thisplant comprises equipment for separating tramp ironfrom the coal, for crushing the coal to a size suitablefor drying and feeding to the pulverizer, for removingthe moisture, and finally grinding it to the desired which it leaves the mines, it is necessary to pass it overa magnetic separator which removes all tramp iron, suchas bolts, nuts, pick-points, etc., as a safeguard againstdamage to the pulverizing and conveying crusher must be used to reduce the green coal to asize suitable for proper drying and pulverizing, unlesscoal can be procured in sizes smaller than i in. screen-ings without sacrificing heat AT LEFT—FRONT VIEW OP PULVERIZED COAL FURNACE IN ONEIDA STREET POWER PLANT, MILWAUKEE. AT RIGHT—THE REVOLVING COAL-DRYING CYLINDER fineness. In recent times the extra investment requiredfor the burning of pulverized eoal has become less anobstacle than formerly. The f^oaring price of coal hasprompted thorough investigation of any process whichholds promise of greater efficiency. These considerations led the Milwaukee company tobegin two years ago the installation of pulverized furnaces and the necessary equipment on firstone and later four additional 468-hp. boilers in the oldOneida Street power plant. This station contains tenboilers, the other five being equipped with Rileystokers. After much development work and manychanges in design, these five boilers, burning pul-verized coal, were put on comparative test with the fivestoker-fired boilers in the same plant. The summary ofthis test is given later in this paper. The generalexperience gain
