However, the river is no longer actively used for navigation, because its estuary is located at the borders of the two Koreas, barred for entrance by any civilian. During the Korean war, in an attempt to slow the North Korean approach, the South Korean military destroyed the Han Bridge, along with the hopes of thousands of citizens of escape.
