Landscape with Emperor seated in palanquin lined & backed with rich, embroidered textiles, topped by dragon finial & carried by 4 attendants; 4 horsemen, 2 holding imperial banner, follow procession (R); astronomer standing at foot of temple on hill & servant throwing cut flowers on ground before procession as 2 figures prostrate themselves (L); flowering plants, fruits & cut flowers strewn about in foreground; additional figures near six-storied pagoda & additional buildings in distance (L) (BRD) picture-frame border with stylized acanthus leaves Initially, famous commissions of this series took place with, notably, 1 set ordered by the duc du Maine & another by his brother the comte de Toulouse; subsequent anonymous commissions followed well into the 18th century. This panel is probably from 1 of these later commissions.
