But if you touch someof them with sealing wax, and some with glass, you will findthat they attract each other. The best way, however, to gen-erate frictional electricity is by means of the Cylinder Machine, which any boy of average intelligence may construct for him-self; and many are the amusements which may be derivedfrom The principal parts belonging to this machine are called thecylinder (A), the frame (B B), the rubber (C) and the conduc-tor (D). For the cylinder (A), take a large, smooth candy cement a circular piece of quarter inch board over the top, where the lid ought to be. Glue a smaller circular piece to thebottom of the jar, and drive a round piece of iron (1-8 by 3inches) into the wood at both ends to act as an axle. Thisaxle is fitted accurately into holes pre\iously made in the up-rights (B. B), so as to turn without waddling. The woodwork should be coated with varnish. The rubber(0) consists of a leather cushion or pad stuffed with hair likethe padding of a saddle. To the top of the pad is sewed a pieceof silk half as wide as the cylinder is long, and extending overthe top of it to within an inch of the points of the conductor,to be mentioned presently. The rubber should be coated with an amalgam of equal partsof mercury, powdered zinc and tin rubbed up together. Therubber should
