Hans Gustav Emil Bauer (1904-1988), German geneticist. Bauer studied at the University of Gottingen, obtaining his doctorate in 1931. He joined the Kaiser Wilhelm Institute for Biology, Berlin-Dahlem, Germany, in 1933. Bauer was the founding editor of the journal 'Chromosoma' in 1939. After the Second World War, the German science institutions in Berlin were transferred to the Max Planck Society, and Bauer worked at the Max Planck Institute for Marine Biology, rising to become director by 1961. He was elected to the Academy of Sciences Leopoldina in 1964. Photographed in 1943, in Berlin-Dahlem, Germany.
