In May, 1885, MayorGrace conferred upon an honor by appoint-ing him one of the FireCommissioners of this city,and time has proven that hisHonor was not mistaken in his selection. At a meeting of thecommissioners, Mr. Smith was given entire charge of the BuildingBureau, a place where his talents are peculiarly fitted. He was born January 29, 1837, in New York City, where, amonghis most intimate associates, and amid even those politically opposedto him, he has ever maintained that dignity which at all times com-mands the respect due to a public servant whose probity passesunquestioned.
