At first he was employed in a bakery for twoyears, and then for three years was an errand boy in a clothingstore in Poughkeepsie. Finally he decided to engage in hisfathers occupation. He accordingly took his place upon theshoemakers bench, learned the trade thoroughly under hisfathers guidance, and ultimately became his fathers partner. It was in 1866 that the two opened a retail boot and shoe busi-ness in Poughkeepsie, under the firm-name of Haubennestel &Son.
