This house was for-merly fortified for defense against the Indians. It is about forty rodswest of the present court house. The first vessel that sailed for theWest Indies fiom New London, sailed from the cove within twentyrods of this house. The first settlement of the town appears to have been oemmenced onwhat was called Cape Ann street. Ibe last house built by tlie firstsettlers stood on this street; it was taken down about twudve yearssince : it was about half a mile west of the present court house. Thefirst meeting house in New London was erected very near the presentalms house. Gov. Wiuthrops residence
