Falkirk Wheel. This is a type of lock that moves between the Union Canal and the Forth and Clyde Canal. These canals, disused since the 1960s, originally had 11 locks over a distance of kilmetres, which connected the two waterways. The aerial extension to the Union Canal along with the wheel were constructed as a rotating boat lift. The wheel consists of two gondolas, each able to lift 300 tonnes, that lift or lower boats the 35 metres between the two canals. Photographed in Falkirk, Scotland.
