The cast-iron devil's fountain sits in the yard at Lachryma Montis, the home of General Mariano Guadalupe Vallejo, the California rancher who settled in the Sonoma Valley in the 1830s. He built his home here in the 1850s, and the devil's fountain probably dates from that period.
