This is a detail from a high-resolution scan of an original antique engraving, published in about 1779 in 'The Modern Universal British Traveller' in London, and later skilfully coloured by hand. It depicts the Bartlow Hills, formerly a Roman tumuli cemetery, at Bartlow in Cambridgeshire, England. Original 1779 engraving. The Hills, near the village of Ashdon in Essex, were once believed to be the last resting place of soldiers killed at the Battle of Ashington in 1016, hence the engraving’s caption. The caption proclaims they were: "raised over the Bodies of those slain in a great battle between Edmund Ironside & Canute the Great". Modern archaeological techniques have now established that the Hills are actually a Roman tumuli cemetery: the graves of a wealthy family who probably lived in the 1st or 2nd century AD at a nearby villa. Today, only three of the seven tumuli depicted in this engraving still stand, although the tallest, 15 metres high, is reputed to be the largest barrow north of the Alps. rate Tour through England, Wales, Scotland, and the Neighbouring Islands' was a part-work begun in London in 1779 and published over the next decade by J. Cooke.
