Star trails over Forbidden City, Beijing, China. Time-exposure image of star trails around the northern celestial pole, created by the Earth's rotation on its axis, The Forbidden City is a large complex of historic royal buildings in Beijing, China. Dating from the 15th century, it has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1987. In traditional Chinese astrology, the pole star (Polaris, upper centre) was called the Ziwei Star and was the heavenly abode of the Celestial Emperor, with the surrounding region of the sky known as the Purple Forbidden enclosure. The Forbidden City, as the residence of the terrestrial emperor, was the earthly counterpart of the celestial abode. Photographed on 23 January 2016.
