At top is the mouth, from which food passes into the oesophagus (gullet), a tube that leads down into the stomach (centre right). Food is digested in the stomach and passed into the small intestine (coiled, below stomach), where the nutrients are absorbed. From there, the remains of the food pass into the large intestine (surrounding the small intestine) where water is absorbed. The faeces are then deposited through the rectum and anus (lower centre).
