Drawing of Asclepiades ( BC), after a statue by Forestier. Asclepiades was one of the 'methodist' school of Greek doctors. His view of health was that it related to the proper 'tension' within the pores, and that disease followed an excessive relaxation or stricture of them. He thus establised many of the ideas of moderation in life from theory, complimenting the Hippocratic views made from observation. Asclepiades may, therefore, be regarded as one of the pioneers of hygiene and its effect on health in normal living.
