Llanynys church, Denbighshire, Wales, UK: hexagonal sepulchral stone cross showing monastic founder St Saeran dressed as a bishop with mitre & crozier
Hexagonal sepulchral stone cross in Llanynys church, Denbighshire, Wales, UK, shows monastic founder St Saeran dressed as a bishop with mitre & crozier, & a muzzled bear at his feet. Variously dated from C9th up to C14th, it formerly stood in the churchyard marking for pilgrims the traditional site of Saeran's grave. Saeran, thought to be the son of Geraint Saer of Ireland, founded a Celtic monastic community here in the C6th. His Festival is held 13 January, the same as Bishop St Saran of Donegal. Saer = Wright, making his name little Wright.
