The North American Aircraft P-51 was designed to fulfill a British requirement in 1940 and was built in 120 days. The US Army Air Corps used a small number of P-51s for tactical reconnaissance, mounted with cameras. A fighter configuration, the A-36A Apache was initially designed but retained the name Mustang. P-51's were extensively used for bomber escort and protection and were favored for their long range and potent high-altitude capability. The P-51 remained in service with the Strategic Air Command until 1949, and became one of the first fighters to see combat in the Korean War. Some air forces around the world continued to use P-51s until the early 1980s. Mustangs are now prized as civilian racers, extensively modified in some cases.
