These scales can be had to weigh by the metric system toyi-g gram, being supplied with weights of 1, 2, 5, 10, 20, 40, GO,100, and 200 grams. When the testing is merely for percentages, the gram weightsare the most convenient, as they are based upon the decimal system, but where it is a question of ascertaining the counts of yarn or theweight of cloth, the grain weights are the best to use. With theabove series of scales and weights, tests can be carried out toalmost perfect accuracy. 279 34 TEXTILE CALCULATIONS When a verj small quantity of yarn is available, say one ortwo yards, it must be weighed with great care. Of course, Avhena large quantity is available, find now many yards will M^eigh 12|grains, if the yarn is worsted; 8^ grains if cotton; and so on forother yarns, according to the system of counting. Suppose, forinstance, that it is required to test the yarn in a cloth, and only asmall piece can be obtained, say two or three square inches. This. Fig. 3. Brown & Sliaipe Scales. must be measured carefully, and as many threads taken out as wallmake one yard, two yards, or as much as possible. For example, let it be two yards of worsted weighing 1 -^^^^^^j- grains. Find thecounts. If two yards weigh 1 -^^^^jj- grains, how many yards willweigh 7,000 grains ? Putting it in the usual form of a proportionas 1 y^^j^y- : 7,000 :: 2 : 10,072 yards, or there are that number ofyards in one pound. As there are 560 yards per hank in worsted, and the counts are indicated by the number of hanks per pound, the 10,072 must be divided by 5G0, thus 10,072 -^ 500 = 18hanks nearly, then the counts would be called ISs, as it is nearthat number. If it were cotton, the same rule would apj)ly, butinstead of dividing by 560, the yards would have to be divided by840 t
