Their positions in this ca-pacity were no sinecures to say the least, forthey found all they could do in capturing andpunishing the many criminals to be found in themining camps. During i860 Mr. DeGolia took aprominent part in the efforts then being madeto subdue the widespread agitation in favor ofhaving the state join the south and secede fromthe Union. During this time he made the ac-quaintance of many prominent men of the state,among them Leland Stanford, with whom hisfriendship continued until his death. In 1863Mr. DeGolia assumed control of the PlacervilleRepublican, the principal Republican newspaper. He was stronglyin favor of placing his friend Stanford in thegubernatorial chair, and urged his nomination andelection upon every occasion. Mr. DeGolia helda prominent place in the civic life of Placervilleuntil 1873, when he removed with his family toOakland, where his useful and eventful careercame to a close in 1889. All of the four children born to the marriage ofDarwin DeGolia and his wife are living in Oak-land, the eldest of whom is George E., of whoma sketch will be found elsewhere in this volume. DR. F. F.
