These difficulties could causeerrors as great as 50 per cent. Echo sounding was thus a tremendousimprovement despite its own inherent inaccuracies. Ocean bottom soundings are available from a number of sourcesincluding, in this country, government agencies such as the NavysHydrographic Office and the U. S. Coast and Geodetic Survey, andprivate oceanographic institutions. Abroad, national hydrographicoffices, such as the British Admiraltys Hydrographic Department, theJapanese Hydrographic Office, and the International HydrographicBureau, collect and publish soundings.
