A Hunting Party at Marly, late 17th or early 18th century. Attributed to Jean Baptiste Martin, Le Vieux (French, 1659-1735). Graphite and gray washes; framing lines in brown ink; sheet: x cm (20 3/8 x 14 7/16 in.). This drawing represents a royal hunt like those known to have taken place at King Louis XIV’s hunting lodge at Marly, located just outside of Paris. Dwarfed by enormous trees, men on foot and horseback, accompanied by musicians carrying French horns, prepare themselves for a hunt while a pack of dogs run in excitement of chasing their prey.
