Sawmill, 16th-century artwork. This sawmill is being operated by a man (lower left) pulling on a rope attached to a crank and pulley system. This powers a vertical chainsaw, which is cutting a log being moved forward by a foot-operated wheel. This is figure 14 from a book by the French inventor and mathematician Jacques Besson (circa 1540-1573). The Latin title of the book was 'Theatrum instrumentorum et machinarum' (Theatre of machines and instruments). It was originally published in around 1572. This engraving is from the 1582 edition, published in Lyon by the publisher Barthelemy Vincent.
