The Flag Raisers of Okinawa. Emulating the now famous flag raising on Iwo Jima's volcanic Mount Suribachi, Marines and Coast Guardsmen bend their backs to the planting of the first stars and stripes to wave over Okinawa. The flag caught the breezes on a height from which the sea was visible on both sides. The much-applauded Iwo Jima flag raising has inspired servicemen to a keen rivalry to have a hand in the "first" unfurling of the colors on each new island conquest. This flag was donated by the crew of a Coast Guard-manned LST which unloaded men and materiel on Okinawa's sands.
