For instance, the shelling wasparticularly murderous on All Saints Day of1914, when the eastern and southern ceme-teries (generally crowded on this day) wereespecially aimed at. Easter Monday of 1916and Good Friday of 1917 were similarlyfavoured. After each check—at Verdun, in Cham-pagne, on the Somme or wherever it mightbe—the Germans revenged themselves onRheims.
