The greater partof the leverage the motorman exerts is in the doublethreaded screw and as the screw and forks are practic-ally axle mounted, any motion of the axle with referenceto the car body does not seriously affect the adjustmentof the brakes. This is one of the strong points claimedfor it. The brake is very smooth in action, and this issaid to be due to the fact that there is a slight spring inthe forks, which cushions the roughness that wouldotherwise be felt when it is applied. Oil between thedisk and wheel does not seriously affect the working,and in fact, this disk is kept slightly lubricated on pur-pose to make its action smooth. It will be noticed inFigure 3 that a ratchet adjustment is provided on thedouble threaded screw.
