Eurostar high speed train exits the French portal at Calais following the 35 minute journey through the Channel Tunnel.
For a short time, Eurostar ran on existing domestic tracks from Waterloo International Station to the Channel Tunnel at reduced speed until the dedicated High Speed 1 line to St Pancras was constructed. The Eurostar trains that travel through the Channel Tunnel linking London Paris and Brussels are 400m long, weigh 800 tonnes and carry 750 passengers. Eurostar can travel at 300km/h (186mph)but is restricted to 160km/h (100mph) in the Channel Tunnel. In the UK, Eurostar runs on High Speed 1 which is the country's first dedicated high-speed railway through some of the most densely populated land in the world. The Eurostar train design is based on the French high speed Train Grande Vitesse (TGV) and the opening of the Channel Tunnel in 1994 provided the opportunity to link London's business and tourist commuters with Paris and Brussels on the new Continental High Speed Rail Network.
