THE CHIEF. THE LAST LAIRD OF MACNAB. CHAPTER I. THE FLIGHT. It was a genial evening in 1823. The sun wascasting long shadows from the glorious old pines ofLeney woods, and the baronial mansion of Buchanan reflected in gorgeous splendorthe last rays of the setting sun. A horseman hadjust fastened his pony at the outskirts of the park,nigh to the Callender road, on the Loch Earn side ofthe village; and now on foot, and enfolded in a tar-tan plaid so as almost to conceal his person, wasthreading the mazes of the wood, and stealthily ap-proached the house of Leney. This was ArchibaldMacNab, the last chieftain of the MacNabs, whohad that morning, for the last time, left his paternalestate of Kennel), on the banks of Loch Tay to takerefuge with his cousin, the last Buchanan of theancient house of Arnprior.
