Galileo's book. Title page of Galileo Galilei's book Dialogue on the Two Chief World Systems, Ptolemaic and Copernican (1632). Galileo agreed with the newer Copernican system, that the Earth orbited the Sun, which led to his trial for heresy. The Ptolemaic system, which had stood for over a millennium, stated that all the celestial bodies orbited the Earth. As this was the view of the Catholic church, Galileo was placed under house arrest by the pope.
