Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of calcium phosphate crystals. These flower-like calcium phosphate structures were grown on a self-assembled monolayer (SAM) of mineralising peptides, attached to a gold substrate. SAMs have been used widely to study the nucleation and growth of minerals to understand how these are controlled in nature.
