The septa, to which allusion has alreadj been made, present many pointsof interest. The frequeue}^ of their occurrence surprised me greatly. Out ofthe first forty-five skulls I examined, thirty contained more or less well-developed septa, between a quarter and half an inch in height. They weremuch more frequent on the left side than the right (about in the proportionof 3 to 1). These skulls had no history, but were obviously European. In twenty-six skulls of Negroes from the Congo, varying in age fromfive years to middle age, only two showed septa, and both these were onthe left side. The majority of these septa rise from the floor of the cavity and divide Anatomy and Patliolog}^ of the Maxillary Sinus 359 it imperfectly into compartments, something after the manner of thedivisions of an old-fashioned third-
