The 9,000 books were printed in England up to the end of 1640, roughly from the reign of Henry the 8th to the Cromwell Revolt, a period preceding and following Shakespeare. The books were purchased from Lady Harmsworth, widow of the collector by President Stanley King, of Amherst College, the trustees of which administer the Folger Library. Dr. Giles E.
